Current state of the bike

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

rear triangle fully pulled apart and bearings driven out. Just ordered a new bearing kit (surprisingly affordable and available) and I will be converting it rfom a 3x9 to a 1x11 and getting new tires and if the stars align a drop post. The win is that

A: I was able (with considerable effort) to get all the old bearings out.

B: I could find a replacement kit and not have to look for bearings individually

C: The bearings and the drivetrain parts are WAY more affordable than I was expecting.

The lose is that my project to add a MBP charger to the cruiser has failed. I bought this

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Which promised me it could put out 64 watts at 20v for charging....if you feed it 24v.  So I bought a 24v converter which finally arrived from china a month later and works perfectly.  When I hook it all up though?  doesn’t work.  The MAC sees 5v and 20v alternatively and wont settle on a voltage and so no current will flow.  Balls.  I bought switches, relays, converters, etc.  All to wind up back at square one.  On well.  I could keep chasing this dragon and adding resistors to step down the voltage to 20v to see if it works, but I have a feeling it wont.  maybe I’ll create a pencil resistor just to see and go from there.

If you are going to 11, why not 12?

SRAM 11 speed in GX is very reasonably priced these days .

First sign of the Serious Cyclist - a proper bike stand. I’ve been wrenching on bikes for years and never gave myself that luxury.

12 wont fit with my current hub, 11 is max with the hub I have and while I can build wheels in my sleep (and I love doing it) its an added expense I don’t want to deal with.

Best investment EVER. I use it for everything. I can clamp a piece of wood in the jaw and turn in 90 degrees for instant small table. I use it for a shower stand with a solar shower. projector stand. pretty much anything that needs a stand

i still do pretty much everything with the bike sitting upside down.......it kinda shows on the saddle and shifters....heh

I’ve done that for sure, but man a bike stand makes life better.

Re. the voltage thing, is a 20v Zener diode not available? (I don’t normally look at these things, so I don’t know).

What of the myriad options are you choosing for a front ring?

For a second there I thought you had a dynamo on the front hub of a cruiser bicycle. And were having problems adding a stem topcap USB.

I don’t know what a zener diode does or how to find one suitable for my application.

get a folding one or don’t get one IMO. Tripod is best

NOTE: used to be a professional bike mechanic, have tried them all.  Unless its bolted to the floor, tripod is best.

i do not doubt that....its one of those things i need to get...but somehow never do... mostly coz moneys tight and its one of those things that can always wait..

So the problem with step down resistors is that they are proportional to input voltage, so as input voltage fluctuates, output voltage fluctuate. Your 64w @ 20v means 3.2a of current, so you are going to need a bigboi resistor to dissipate the power, too.

A zener diode is a p-n junction (solid state) device that can regulate voltage as long as it’s supplied with more voltage than necessary. If you google “zener voltage regulator” you can get some info. It’s a simple circuit. The problem is my knowledge falls off at about this point - I don’t know how to properly select the right size diode or series resistor for your application. And the issue is you’d still need that 24v, so if that’s the source of your heartache, this isn’t much help.

Haha, sorry. My focus unexpectedly shifted slightly toward mtb.

Wishing you luck with the 12v cig lighter plug adapter.

I’ve got a converter than steps up to a steady 24.3 volts regardless of input so the voltage fluctuation and 24v volt issue are solved.  The thing is even if I feed the stupid thing with exactly 19.2 volts I don’t know if it would work.

I should be able to sort out gearing pretty easily once I sit down and think about it. But I need to make sure the big stuff is handled first, like dimensions and spacing.

I’ve 4 USB 2.4 amp outlets that are kicking ass right now but cheap stuff is cheap and I got what I paid for.

So flat here I broke down and bought a 80's road bike that fits CX tires and made it into a SS for the very large anything that isn’t a race ride.  I do miss the mountains until I consider how bad I’d suffer on a small climb anymore.

What’s the thing you’re trying to provide power to?  Sorry, I’ve seen a few of your posts and know you’re trying to power something, but can’t remember all the details.

Oh right, now I remember, you want to plug it in directly, not run through an inverter.

I think it may be a bit more complicated than what you are thinking. Have you looked at a MacBook pinout? There’s a “Charge Sense” pin - I think there are some control electronics in the powerbrick that controls the charge rate, which is really important with LiPo batteries because it’s really easy to toast them, with disastrous results (see Samsung Galaxy S7 fires, etc.)
